September 2009 PRAYER OF ALIGNMENT WITH GOD’S PURPOSES(1) I Chronicles 626-27 reveals that Elkanah was a Levite. I Samuel 1 says he was from Zuph in the hill country of Ephraim. Hannah, his wife was barren which was made more painful by the provocation of Peninnah, her mate. Her initial reactions were weeping and refusing to eat and depression (being down cast). She changed. 1.   She refused to settle for less; nothing that Elkanah would say or do would comfort her (I Samuel 14,8). 2.   She cast her anxiety upon God. “In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lordâ€(vs 10); see also (Phil 4:6-7, 1Pet 5:7) 3.   She offered the son to God with a vow. Her prayer aligned with the will and purpose of God. She was from a priestly family. Her son will be a Levite. She wanted a son and God was looking for a priest to take over from Eli. Her prayer struck a chord with God’s purpose. 4.   She persevered in prayer. “She kept on praying to the Lord†(vs 12). “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up†(Lk 18:1). 5.   She prayed in faith. “Then she went her way and ate something and her face was no longer downcast†(vs 18). She believed the matter was settled and went her way rejoicing. Prayer is not just petitioning God over the provocations that the “Peninnahs†bring into our lives. What do we see as God’s stake in our lives? What do we see as what will bring God glory in the answer to our prayers? How will our prayers align with God’s will and purposes? These are the steps to receiving sure answers to prayer. The Holy Spirit helped Hannah to go beyond depression, to asking prayer in the acceptable time of God’s favour and she received what she asked for and more. May we learn to listen to God as we face difficulties and pray as He leads us. That way, we will also strike a chord with His purposes through the situations we are challenged by. Your brother, Uche Azuonye PRAYER ITEMS  September 2009 God Tues., Sept. 1 God is infinite: God is measureless, limitless and boundless. God’s power is limitless. Ps 147:5, Rom 11:33. God has no beginning or end and no limits. Wed., Sept. 2 God is immutable or unchangeable: All that God is, He has always been. All that He has been and is, He will ever be. Fri., Sept. 4 God is Jehovah or Yahweh: The name of the independent and self-existent being- “I AM WHO I AM†– only belongs to Jehovah God.
